It has being reported that the former South African leader, Nelson Mandela, is in a "permanent vegetative state" and that his family have been told they can turn off his life support machine.

The AFP news agency said it has seen court documents which show doctors advising that the machine keeping the former president and anti-apartheid hero alive be switched off.
