Sustained downpours caused some areas of Indonesia's capital Jakarta to flood on Sunday (January 19), inundating homes, disrupting transportation and causing power cuts.

The National Disaster Management Agency, police and soldiers worked together to evacuate residents.

The National Disaster Management Agency also said that this year flooding in Jakarta had so far claimed seven lives and temporarily displaced more than 30,000 people.

Residents are taking refuge in public places such as churches, mosques, and shopping complexes. Some left their homes last Monday (january 13) because they lived in low-lying areas.

Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia when the rains come due to lack of awareness of the environment, water governance, and drainage facilities.
