Maurizo Galante is an equal opportunity haute couture designer. A point he again underlined with his most recent collection, which featured new and long established models, both young and not so young, that all walked his runway as if they were royalty. It probably is very hard to feel any other way in one of Galante's creations. His ensembles are always statement pieces that explore and push the architectural limits of clothing designs.
Fans of the brand will recognize a number of his signature styles in this most recent show. Including open weave fur coats, skirts and pants crafted out of hundreds of strips of horizontal fabric, lightly linked to one another via minute cloth filaments and fisherman's net-like tops, that were given a touch of glamour thanks to the tiny connecting crystal beads.
There was undoubtedly an Asian influence to the collection between the use of traditional Japanese fabrics and the inclusion of kimono like features on some of the ensembles. Perhaps the designer was inspired by his recent trip to Singapore for its Haute Couture fashion week last November.
Whatever effect Asia might have had on Galante, this collection had a real vitality to it. And a slightly youthful, rock and roll one at that. If you take into account the sequined asymmetrical tops, shimmering frayed jacquard pants and the long draping coats cut in "paper doll chain-esque" geometric patterns.
This show was a living breathing representation of a designer who still feels the creative calling as strongly as he ever did.
