Throughout the years, many Batmobiles have appeared on the auction block, however one that’s reportedly the world’s very first Batmobile sold this past Saturday for $137,000.

The vehicle was built by Forrest Robinson in 1963. Robinson used Batman comics from the 1940s and 1950s eras as inspiration for the completely custom car.

His version was finished 2 years before George Barris started designing the vehicle that would later be known as the ‘Batmobile’ for the ABC TV series ‘Batman’ which aired in the mid 1960s.

A DC Comics licensee got wind of the 1963 model Batmobile and paid Robinson to travel around the U.S. in the vehicle and promote Batman comics. As time went on though, the TV Batmobile became the widely accepted car of Batman.

Custom car makers began focusing on creating replicas of the television version and with interest dwindling in his own vehicle, Robinson made the decision to sell his Batmobile.

The car seemingly disappeared for awhile until someone spotted it in a New Hampshire field in 2008. Toy Car Exchange purchased the vehicle and had it restored before putting it up for auction.
