Top officials from almost 190 nations are in Geneva in an attempt to hammer out a potential deal on global warming.

Delegates at the United Nations Climate Change negotiations will aim to trim down a 37-page blueprint into a negotiating document.

The draft agreement was built on national plans for curbs on rising world greenhouse gas emissions. It’s hoped it can be finalised at a summit in Paris in December.

“This week we need to act with responsibility and ambition, I ask you to work with efficiency and a sense of compromise. We are part of the same team, this is not a competition amongst us, we are just one team for one planet,” said Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, president of the negotiations.

The conference gets underway just days after the World Meteorological Organisation said 2014 was the hottest year on record – part of a “warmng trend” set to continue.

Reaching an agreement between rich and developing nations is seen as one of the main hurdles.
