http://www.instantseries.com - The average person reads at 200 to 400 words per minute. Do you know your reading speed?

There’s a common notion that the more words you read in a less amount of time means you wouldn’t comprehend most of the words. This is NOT necessarily true.

Here are some techniques you can practice to increase reading speed without compromising comprehension.

- Skimming is usually already done by most people naturally although it can be taught and practiced. It’s glancing through a book or article focusing only on what is needed to understand the text. It’s the simplest form of speed reading.

- Meta guiding. This is when you use a pointer such as pen of finger to help focus. It can also be used to help determine speed.

- Peripheral vision. Instead of word for word, use horizontal peripheral vision to take a snap shot to view the entire passage.

- Rapid serial visual presentation or RSVP. Eliminate the visual space between text.

- Shut off sub vocalization. Sub vocalization is the habit of mouthing the words you read quietly or hearing those words in your mind. Simply shut this off. It buffers your brain activity because it separates your focus into both visual and speech.
