Authorities in Sao Paulo have cleared a central city square of drug addicts and homeless people. The operation, on June 11, centred on Plaza Princesa Isabel, where homeless addicts had been congregating since being moved from another area in May.

Two drug dealers were arrested during the operation, the state government said.

Gov Geraldo Alckmin said 3,000 treatment places were being made available. He said he was determined to see people leave the streets and return to their families.
