A Philadelphia police SWAT officer was shot and killed in the line of duty Friday morning.

SWAT Corporal James O’Connor was responding to a home on Bridge Street near Duffield Street in the Frankford neighborhood around 5:45 a.m. when someone opened fire. The veteran officer was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later.

O'Connor was a 23-year veteran of the police force who served his last 15 years on the SWAT team, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. He was a married father of two. His son is currently a 9th District police officer.

Afterward, a heavy police presence, including officers with long guns, could be seen standing outside a home in that block. The scene isn't far from SEPTA's Frankford Transportation Center.

The officer was taken to Temple University Hospital whee he was pronounced dead shortly after 6 a.m.

Philadelphia police officers and leadership, including Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw and Fraternal Order of Police President John McNesby, and Mayor Jim Kenney have arrived at the hospital.
