U.S. officials confirmed the troop withdrawal to The Wall Street Journal, though the exact number of Russian soldiers involved remains unclear. Last week, Ukraine dispatched tanks and armored vehicles to support its troops, who crossed the border into Russia’s Kursk region.
On August 6, President Putin ordered his forces to swiftly remove the Ukrainian troops from Russian territory, but Kyiv maintains that its forces continue to make progress. Ukrainian forces have reportedly advanced at least 20 miles into Russia, with Ukraine’s top military commander claiming the capture of 74 Russian towns and villages.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on X on Wednesday, “We are advancing in the Kursk region, making progress of one to two kilometers in various areas since the start of the day. We have captured over 100 Russian servicemen during this period. I am thankful to everyone involved; this will speed up the return of our soldiers home.”
Putin has denounced the operation as a major provocation. On Monday, he accused Ukraine of launching the attack with the support of its Western allies to strengthen its position in potential peace negotiations, according to Reuters. The White House has denied prior knowledge of the attack and has stated it was not involved in the offensive.
Heorhiy Tykhi, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, explained on Tuesday that the purpose of the incursion is not to occupy Russian land but to safeguard Ukrainian lives and protect the nation from Russian attacks. He added that Moscow’s agreement to “restore a just peace” would lead to an end of the Ukrainian raids.
Russia, which began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, is now facing its own crisis in its border regions. Nearly 200,000 people have fled their homes in the Kursk region, and authorities in the neighboring Belgorod region declared a state of emergency on Wednesday.
“The situation in our Belgorod region remains extremely challenging and tense due to shelling from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Houses are being destroyed, and civilians have died and been injured,” stated Vyacheslav Gladkov, the Belgorod regional governor, on Telegram.
