A dog rescue shelter in Afghanistan is working to place animals with owners... most of whom are soldiers returning home after tours of duty.

The Nowzad clinic vaccinates local dogs before they are shipped out to their new homes abroad.

For many soldiers returning from war, mental health is major concern.

But thanks to the help of these furry friends , Nowzad founder Pen Farthing says soldiers may have a jump start on their treatment.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FOUNDER OF BRITISH CHARITY NOWZAD, AN ANIMAL SHELTER, PEN FARTHING, SAYING:

"Dogs have been proven to be for post-traumatic stress treatment they send dogs in the hospitals to the veteran associations and so actually the soldiers who have adopted a dog over here are already addressing those post traumatic stress moments."

It's a good deal for the dogs as well.

Besides getting them off the streets... where stray dogs are often shot or poisoned.... they received a shelter, health care and a plate of delicious potato stew every day.

For man and beast-- a match made in Afghanistan.
