Hundreds of followers of Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, celebrated his birthday 77th on Friday (July 06) in the hill town of Dharamsala in India's northern Himachal Pradesh state.

The Dalai Lama was born on July 6, 1935, at Taktser hamlet in northeastern Tibet and was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso.

In the Lha Ghyal Ri Buddhist temple, devotees sang hymns and prayed for the spiritual leader's well-being and good health at a widely attended function in Dharamsala, where the Tibetan government-in-exile is seated.

The Tibetan cabinet and parliament issued statements appealing to the Tibetans to preserve their cultural heritage. The statement also expressed gratitude to the people of India for their help.

Activists say China violently stamped out religious freedom and culture in Tibet, the mountainous region of western China that has been under Chinese control since 1950.

Beijing considers the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in India in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule, a separatist. The Dalai Lama says he merely seeks greater autonomy for his Himalayan homeland.
