The mosque was commissioned in 1597 by Valide Sultan Safiye, the mother of Sultan Mehmet III. Architect Davut Aga started the construction at Galata Bridge, and it was completed in 1663 under the supervision of Valide Sultan Turhan Hatice, the mother of Mehmet IV.Wide steps lead to the front courtyard on a paltform. The ablution fountain of the courtyard is considered to be the most beautiful one in Istanbul.
