After the conquest of Istanbul, this mosque was built by the architect Atik Sinan in the reign of Sultan Mehmet II (the Conqueror), at the site of the Church of the Holy Apostles, in the years 1463-1470. The mosque was destroyed in an earth-quake and was reconstructed in baroque style by the architect Mehmet Tahir in the years 1767-1771.
